It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.

The walk up to the castle ruins and Hida no Sato were two favorites, but there was so much to see and do while relaxing that I’d encourage people to take it easy and not try to hit everything. Spend time in your ryokan or hotel stay, and relax.
I was traveling in Japan for 25 days and out of the 11 accommodations I stayed in, Hotel Wood Takayama was in my top 3. The hotel is easy to find and the check-in process was smooth. I had no trouble as an English speaker. The room was clean and had a nice view of local houses and lots of trees. Location was great - less than 15 minutes from the train station and located right near great restaurants and stores, as well as a convenience store. There was a free bar in the evenings (including free sake tasting) and a nice bath room.
Both our rooms were so relaxing and comfortable, we didn't want to leave! Everything was so clean and well organized, and every detail had been thought out.
The breakfast was a huge hit with our kids, they really enjoyed all the different options. The restaurant on site was also great for dinner.
But the best part? The onsen! Everyone in our family loved it! So relaxing, and just a wonderful treat - especially the outdoor baths.
We also rented bikes from the hotel to tour around Takayama which our family enjoyed.
I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.
Traditional Japanese Ryokan with nicely decorated rooms. This was my first Ryokan experience and I have never felt as well cared for as during my stay there. Futon was very comfortable, too (I have never slept on one before). Staff is very attentive and helpful. Great inhouse onsens. Yukata were available for free for guests. Many ammendities were available for free and I loved their shampoo. Takayama old city center is just a 15 min walk away. Takayama station is just 6 min away by foot.
Our entire stay at Ryokan Asunaro was magical. The hotel is beautiful and very traditional, the dinner experience is not to be missed, the location is ideal with a many restaurants around and a beautiful town to explore right at its doorsteps. The rooms are very comfortable and we found the laundry room very useful. The staff is curious and very responsive. We were treated with kindness and felt at home during our stay. The onsen is very clean and cozy. We can't wait to go back.
This is literally the best staying ever. I traveled everywhere, a lot in 5 stars hotels, but this hotel beats them all. The place is clean, the amenities is amazing, especially there is a washing machine in your room with detergents. The room is HUGE for Japan's standard. It's one bedroom apartment style. Location is top notch, just few steps from Takayama Train and Bus Station. And it's cheap!! Love the place so much!
The ryokan is well located for the train and bus stations, and central Takayama. We stayed there for a night before getting the bus to the Japanese Alps.
The owners were friendly and kind. They made us tea when we arrived, and later gave us some plum wine.
We enjoyed using the on site onsen, and had a good night's sleep on the futons.
We are both vegetarian, and the owners made us a wonderful breakfast.
Very nice and traditional Ryokan near the main attraction of Takayama. The staff was always attentive and welcoming with us. The traditional Japan dinner and breakfast are served in your room at specific times and with a fix menù so l suggest this experience only to who is open to try new and very different tastes compared to our usual continental dinners.Overall an excellent stay!
Traditional ryokan with great attention. The staff was extremely friendly and provided an excellent service. The breakfast and specially the dinner was fantastic, the best meal by far we had in Japan.
The onsen of the hotel is small but very nice. Access to the onsen of the Alpina hotel is provided as well, which is bigger and having nice views of the city.
Super new and clean hotel!! The rooms are smaller but they are super modern, felt like no one stayed in our room before. They also provide DHC branded amenities even facial oil and toner on the first floor. Staff was kind and courteous. If Ryokans aren't your ideal place to stay, this is super comfortable!!! VERY CLEAN. Onsen on the first floor!
Arusa san and her staff went above and beyond. During our trip we had a medical emergency and they assisted with finding a doctor, securing an immediate appointment and transporting us. The experience of staying at the Honjin Hiranoya Ryokan was truly outstanding. The people of Takayama are so kind and helpful. We can’t wait to return.
What a great hotel for a lovely break in Takayama ; far from the busy, overcrowded cities. The big suite is perfect for a romantic escapade, with a view on the city & the mountains, which is gorgeous at sunset. The bathtub was amazing, it was so relaxing! And we had a balcony to enjoy our even more. I highly recommend.
The hotel has everything you need for a confortable and ncie stay in Takayama. It is very close to the JR station (like 5min walk) and the city centre. The room was a bit bigger that the "japanease standard". The onsen was also really nice. The cost/quality ratio is very very high!
I've been stayed at Sumiyoshi several times since 2010 and it's always an outstanding experience. An authentic, charming ryokan with hospitable and gracious hosts, food so wonderful it's hard to even describe, and unbeatable location. There's no better way to experience Japan.
It’s a beautiful little Ryokan in the stunning Takayama valley area. Nearby there’s nature walks, hikes, onsen and a lovely river. The staff all spoke English well and provided amazing vegan options for us upon advanced request. Will definitely be back here soon.
Beautiful surroundings, complete rest while being in the Ryokan. Good bus connection of 1.5 hours from Takayama, given the distant location. Very nice staff, absolute great food and plenty Onsen options private or public.
Beautiful onsen, room, facitility, and in a great location to see Takayama. Really nice way of having ryokan experience without needing a car to get into countryside. Absolutely lovely breakfast. Relaxing.
This ryokan excedeed our expectations. If you want to find peace in the middle of the hida mountains this is it. Beautiful private and semi privare onsen. The best part of our Japan trip!
Location near station and old streets, huge varied breakfast, free onsen and ramen, free coffee and pillowservice. Real Japanese room with anazing view on Takayama and the mountains.
Amazing place for a wonderdul experience of traditionnal ryokan and Onsen.
Everything was just perfect : room, breakfast, dinner, onsen, staff.
The best value for money in Japan !
